
Dr David Epstein graduated from the University of Cape Town Medical School in 1990 and completed his Internship at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. Between 1992 and 1998 Dr Epstein gained experience in a number of medical disciplines both in South Africa and abroad. He worked in emergency medicine, paediatrics at Addington Hospital, Durban; general practice in rural Canada; orthopaedics at the Royal Sea Bathing Hospital in Margate, UK and as a Senior Medical Officer at a community hospital on Cape Town’s south peninsula. Eight years after graduating Dr Epstein decided to specialise in Internal Medicine and returned to the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital, obtaining his fellowship (FCP) in 2002. This was followed by sub-specialty training in Gastroenterology. During this period Dr Epstein was awarded the AS Little Fellowship and completed part of his training at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam under Prof. Chris Mulder. Dr Epstein obtained his Certificate in Gastroenterology in 2006.
Dr Epstein is currently in private practice at Vincent Pallotti Hospital, Cape Town and has an Honorary Senior Lecturer appointment in the Department of Medicine, University of Cape Town. He is a member of the SA Gastroenterology Society and the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation. He has a specific interest in inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) and manages the SA Gastroenterology Society IBD Registry.
Dr Epstein brings his broad experience in medicine to the practice of gastroenterology. He prides himself on his good listening skills and empathetic manner which he considers as important as sound theoretical knowledge and technical ability with an endoscope.
